Red-Tailed Hawk Overcomes Fractured Ulna

red-tailed hawl with injured wingThe following story was shared with us by Dane County Humane Society Wildlife Center in Wisconsin.

After being found in a cornfield and unable to fly, this red-tailed hawk was brought to the Dane County Humane Society’s Wildlife Center. It was determined upon examination that the hawk appeared to be severely emaciated and suffered from a fracture in its left ulna.

He was unmotivated to eat or move. Through gavage-feeding EmerAid Intensive Care Carnivore, he quickly began to recover. He was soon able to eat soft pieces of mice through hand-feeding and eventually on his own.

After 27 days of bandaging, his fracture callused. He was eventually moved to an outdoor pen where he rebuilt his flight muscles. A couple of months later, he was released near where he was found.
