Gulls And Terns Sickened By Red Tide Algal Bloom

How many birds can you spot in this picture? This is only a handful of our latest “red tide” patients here at Save Our Seabirds in Sarasota, Florida.

We’re experiencing a second wave of “red tide” patients right now, consisting mostly of gulls and terns. Each bird in this picture came in weak and lethargic from consuming dangerous quantities of brevetoxins.

They were all given EmerAid IC Piscivore as part of their therapy for the first 2 to 3 days of hospitalization, until they were strong enough to receive solid foods.

Thankfully the red tide is starting to calm down again, and so far we have released two laughing gulls and one royal tern. We look forward to releasing many more in the near future!
