Eastern Cottontail Rabbit Versus Cat

release of Eastern cottontail rabbitThe following story was shared with us by Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey.

In October 2019, this adult Eastern cottontail rabbit was admitted to Woodford Cedar Run’s Wildlife Hospital after being attacked by a cat in Audubon, New Jersey. Luckily, the finder intervened and saved the cottontail from further harm.

Intake examination indicated that the cottontail had suffered lacerations to its face and eyelids in addition to weakness and lethargy from the interaction.

Supportive care was started immediately including fluids, pain medications, and antibiotics. When the cottontail was hydrated, EmerAid IC Herbivore slurry was administered to provide for nutritional needs. This was discontinued when the cottontail was eating well on its own and maintaining weight.

The cottontail recovered from its injuries after a few weeks and was released back to its native habitat.
