The following story was shared with us by All Species Kinship of Michigan.

This juvenile trumpeter swan was found downed and unable to fly. A gunshot had entered the humerus and carpal bones. Radiographs revealed pellet shot throughout the upper cavity. The swan had lower than expected body weight upon intake at 8.5 kilograms (about 18.7 pounds).

This male (DNA-tested) never had a normal appetite. He ate only minimally and was unable to maintain body weight. He was gavaged four times a day using a mixture of EmerAid Intensive Care Omnivore and a waterfowl maintenance food. Diagnostics were continued in an effort to reveal the cause of inappetence.

The swan was tested for Aspergillus and treated with voriconazole preventatively, in addition to broad-spectrum antibiotics and pain management.

A male mallard duck was found with a plastic bottle ring wedged around his head. The duck was unable to open his mouth and was anorexic upon intake. After subcutaneous fluid therapy, the bird was started on EmerAid IC Omnivore for the following 75 hours.

All Species Kinship (A.S.K.) rescues abandoned chickens from the wild. These birds are often in compromised condition and with unknown histories. EmerAid IC Omnivore is used when they have diminished appetites. This is often due to underlying bacterial infections. These chickens are gavaged, typically three times daily at minimum, to help them recoup.
