The following story a Mallard duck was shared with us by Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Colorado.

On a bright, cold, winter morning, a compassionate individual came across a male Mallard duck flapping clumsily around in the mud in a rural wetland. The bird was clearly vulnerable and hurt, and its soon-to-be rescuer couldn’t leave it behind.

Our rehabilitators were prepared for their arrival and immediately ushered the bird into the exam room. They drew blood to test for illness and gave him a thorough examination. The evaluation showed a few minor wounds, broken primary feathers, and a dislocated right wing, which prevented the bird from flying.

He was treated with pain medication and tested for avian influenza. Fortunately, his results came back negative, and after a week of rest, EmerAid IC Herbivore, and veterinary care, the Mallard healed quickly. He was soon back to his spunky self and was upgraded to a large outdoor enclosure. After acclimating again to the outdoors, the veterinary team cleared him for release.

Thanks to this kind-hearted rescuer, our Animal Care Team’s efforts, and the supplemental calories of EmerAid, this gorgeous Mallard got a second chance and returned to his natural habitat.
