Young Osprey Caught In Fishing Line Is Injured And Malnourished

young osprey with bandage wrapped on right footThe following story about an osprey was submitted by the Marine Science Center in Florida.

This nestling osprey came to us from Port Orange, Florida. The bird was found hanging from the nest via fishing line. This resulted in a constriction wound around one leg with localized swelling.

On intake, the bird was thin at 0.8 kilograms (about 1.8 pounds), dehydrated and had low total protein.

We started the bird on EmerAid IC Piscivore — 25 mL, tube-fed twice daily until the total protein was at a normal level. We then began feeding the bird 15 mL twice a day, and also hand-feeding silversides.

We discontinued tube-feeding once the bird was reliably eating on its own. The bird transferred to another facility for continued care at 1.3 kilograms (about 2.9 pounds).
