Unresponsive Cape Serotine Bat Gets Care

a Cape serotine bat held in hand being fed by syringeThe following story about a Cape serotine bat was submitted by Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital in South Africa.

This Cape serotine bat (Laephotis capensis) was found on the ground. He was cold and unresponsive.

An examination revealed multiple puncture wounds as well as a torn wing. We suspect he had been caught by a cat.

He was hydrated and rewarmed slowly. This young bat thoroughly enjoyed lapping EmerAid IC Carnivore as he gained his strength back. His prognosis is guarded, as cat bites can be very serious in a small creature like a bat.
