Three-Toed Box Turtles Get Help

Three three-toed box turtles were brought to Sandy’s Haven suffering shell rot and malnutrition.

We syringe-fed EmerAid IC Omnivore and immediately began treatment for shell rot.

We gently scrubbed the shells with chlorhexidine solution to remove any compromised scutes and loose keratin pieces. The shells were then dried thoroughly and treated with a diluted betadine solution.

Treatment continued with sulfadiazine cream applied four times a day until healing was complete. This took about two weeks.

Syringe feeding with EmerAid IC Omnivore discontinued after seven days when the turtles began eating on their own.
