Smooth-Billed Ani Needed A Bit Of Help

smooth-billed ani standing on towel The following story about a smooth-billed ani was shared with us by St. John Wildlife Rehabilitation in St. John Island, U.S. Virgin Islands.

This smooth-billed ani is a younger bird that was found in dinghy off of the southern shoreline of St. John. The weight on intake was 95 grams (about 3.4 ounces).

After hydration, the bird was offered EmerAid IC Carnivore and alternated with minced food rolled into small balls, during first and second day feedings.

The bird seemed uninjured. We speculate that the ani may have just gotten into a bad situation on the dinghy.

After care, the weight reached 100 grams (about 3. 5 ounces), and the bird was released back to the wild.
