The following story about a shikra was submitted by Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital in South Africa.
This juvenile shikra (Accipiter badius) was found on the ground in a garden in the Free State. We suspect trauma due to an impact.
Both legs were partially paralyzed, but thankfully he still had feeling in both limbs. He was treated for shock, pain, and inflammation around his lower spine.
These cases always have a poor prognosis, but cage rest and medication have both made a huge difference.
In the past few weeks, we have seen a marked improvement. Initially he was unable to stand or sit up, but now he is perching!
We had to tube-feed him with EmerAid IC Carnivore in the beginning, as he was unable to grip his food. He can now hold his prey item, and he is eating on his own. We are cautiously optimistic for a full recovery.
