Mississippi Kite Unable To Eat

Mississippi kite bird wrapped and held in a towelThe following story about a Mississippi kite was shared with us by the World Bird Sanctuary in Missouri.

This Mississippi kite was found underneath its nest tree after a storm. It had a severe trichomoniasis infection in the mouth and throat. The large lesions caused by this infection were keeping the bird from being able to swallow food, as the throat was almost completely blocked up.

Gavage feedings of EmerAid IC Carnivore were used to sustain the bird and give the kite time for the trichomoniasis medications to take effect.

After a few days, the medications were able to do their work and the mouth and throat lesions were able to be removed so the bird could have solid food again. Without the calories provided by EmerAid, this kite would not have had the strength to get through to when it could eat again.

The Mississippi kite was successfully released in time for migration alongside our other juvenile Mississippi kites.
