Laughing Gulls Fall Victim To Algal Bloom

laughing gull steps out of carrier onto sand at the beachThe following story about laughing gulls was submitted by Save Our Seabirds, Inc. in Florida.

These two laughing gulls presented in fall 2022 for signs of algal bloom toxicity. They were both weak and lethargic on presentation, but they responded well to stabilization and medical therapy.

During the course of their hospital stay, they both received EmerAid IC Piscivore syringe feedings until they were strong enough to eat fish on their own.

After several weeks of flight practice in our outdoor enclosures, they were ready for release! They were released together in a location that did not have an active algal bloom near the beach.
