Injured Green-Winged Teal Survives Gull Attack

This November, an injured green-winged teal came into care at International Bird Rescue’s Los Angeles Wildlife Center from our partner’s at Project Wildlife in San Diego. The rescuer saw her being attacked and pecked by gulls, causing significant injuries to her head and some minor injuries to her eyes. It was also discovered that she was healing from a wing fracture, which explained why she wasn’t able to escape the gulls.

When she first came in, she was thin and too depressed to eat. For nearly a week, the duck needed nutritional support with EmerAid IC Omnivore tubings. While she was being stabilized, she also had an extensive surgery on her head that healed beautifully in only 10 days.

EmerAid was essential during her initial stabilization, wash process, and post-surgery to make sure she could recover and gain strength. After a week of EmerAid tubings, the bird started eating on her own and shortly thereafter all her injuries were healed and she was beautifully waterproof and well-flighted.

After only 15 days in care, this beautiful bird was successfully released back into the wild.
