Great Horned Owl Recovers From Beak And Eye Injuries

great horned owl with wings raised in enclosureThe following story about a great horned owl was shared with us by Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center of Roanoke.

This adult great horned owl was admitted from Natural Bridge, Virginia.

On admission this bird was severely underweight (keel score of 1, weighing about 900 grams or about 2 pounds), had a fractured beak, and an old eye injury he is still recovering from.

To help him recover from his emaciation, we used diluted EmerAid IC Carnivore for a few days and then full strength EmerAid until stable before transitioning to solid food. He is now eating solid food and weighs around 1.4 kilograms (about 3.1 pounds) with a healthy keel score.

Due to his beak and eye injuries, this patient will remain at the Center for a few months before being released. He is expected to make a full recovery.
