Flauco De Lafuentes The Opossum

opossum with mouth injuryThis story was shared with us by Nay Nays Wildlife Rehabilitation in Texas.

It all started with an opossum I named Flauco De Lafuentes. It was late at night when I got a disturbing phone call. The caller, an employee at a store, stated she had found an injured, grown opossum behind the store. She said he was alive, but bleeding and breathing badly.

When I arrived at the location and first laid eyes on Flauco, I realized he had been beaten with a blunt object. The look of defeat and sadness was in his eyes. My heart broke at this level of cruelty. I immediately took him home and got him stabilized for the night.

The next day I got him to my veterinarian for X-rays. His jaw was broken and needed to be wired in two places, a G-tube (gastronomy tube) was placed because he was unable to eat for six weeks by mouth. I took him home on Meloxicam for pain and started the tube feedings using my EmerAid Carnivore supplement.

Flauco came in weighing 7 pounds. Once fully rehabilitated, he weighed in at 12 pounds. His growth was on point and the EmerAid supplied him with all his essential nutrients while he was healing.

Even though he healed, he was deemed non-releasable due to blindness from being hit in the head.
