Fallen Herons With Trouble Fledging

profile of blue heron chicks headThe following story about herons was submitted by the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

This spring at the Oregon Coast Aquarium we received a more than usual number of great blue heron fledglings through our wild bird rehabilitation program. Most had apparently fallen from their nests a bit early, or were otherwise not thriving during the fledging process.

These birds came to us with broken appendages in some cases and always thin. EmerAid IC Piscivore allowed us to get them hydrated and meet their nutritional needs until we could get them eating fish.

Getting the birds stabilized in some cases meant that they could withstand surgery for some nasty breaks; like in the case of this heron chick we dubbed “Frederic.”
