Eurasian Collared Dove Overcomes Injuries From Cat Attack

injured Eurasian collared dove perched in cageThe following story about a Eurasian collared dove was submitted by Kent Wildlife Rehabilitation in Idaho.

A juvenile Eurasian collared dove was reported by an individual to have been attacked by a cat. It was unable to fly.

On intake, damage to tail feathers and a small wound on the left wing were noted. A blocked cloaca was cleaned with warm water.

The bird was flat (minimal response) and reported grounded for over 24 hours, so 15 ml of Normasol was given by gavage. The antibiotic Enrofloxacin was started.

On Day 2, the dove was still not eating, so it was fed 10 ml EmerAid IC Omnivore twice a day (BID).

The patient was offered dove seed, but after 10 days was still not eating on own. Enrofloxacin was discontinued. After two days, the dove began eating on its own. Tail feathers fell out and wounds appeared healed.

After an additional three weeks, the tail feathers had regrown and the dove was flying well. Currently waiting for a break in the weather to release.
