Barred Owl Overcomes Injuries From Being Hit By A Car

barred owl with eye injuryThe following story was shared with us by Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey.

In January 2020, our center received a barred owl that was brought to us from Woodland Township in New Jersey by a conservation officer. This owl was in particularly bad shape, yet still standing on his own!

Prior to rescue the owl had been hit by a car and suffered severe head trauma as well as ocular damage. Initial exam indicated no fractures, but there was significant presence of blood in his right ear, nares, and mouth.

Our staff administered supportive care through fluid therapy, pain medication, anti-inflammatory medication, and antibiotics. The owl was placed in our ICU unit for three days and significantly improved even in that short time span.

After a few days of carnivore slurry, we continued with our emaciation protocol. We are happy to report that he is currently self-feeding and doing well. We hope for a successful outcome and release.
