American Kestrel Overcomes Traumatic Injuries

Americana kestrel on wooden perch in habitatThe following story about an American kestrel was shared with us by St. John Wildlife Rehabilitation in St. John Island, U.S. Virgin Islands.

This young adult American kestrel was hit by a car on St. Thomas Island and transferred to us on St. John. We are now starting to develop an extension of our organization on this other island. The kestrel weighed 150 grams (about 5.3 ounces) on intake.

Once the kestrel was hydrated and alert enough, we fed EmerAid IC Carnivore.

The bird was kept for care and treatment of a broken radius and ulna.

While this was a tough case, the bird healed very well. Once healthy, the kestrel was released back to the wild.
