The Squirrel That Survived

Betsy Shank of Acorn Acres offered this first-person story on a squirrel that was rescued.

“Whew! What a morning! Our little Princess presented with seizures, very stuttered respirations, and no response to touch or pain. But one of our sub-permitees and our rehabilitator fought. We could see ‘her’ in her eyes, she was still there but struggling in a big way.

“Without being too cliché we ‘threw the book at her’ after we got the seizures stopped — heat, sugar, subq fluids, body massages, antibiotics — and we didn’t stop. For nearly two hours straight she was the only critter on the planet, and she had our undivided attention.”

And later, she added the following:

“We are proud to provide this update: Princess is on her feet and just now took some emergency rescue food called EmerAid by Lafeber. EmerAid is a semi-elemental diet designed to meet the needs of critically ill patients. Yes, this is totally a plug for them, their product is as valuable as gold!

“Anyway, we’ve got crazy catch-up to do but wanted to share an update as soon as possible. Princess is still in critical condition, but things appear to be headed in the right direction.”
