A white pelican was admitted into the Wings of Hope Wildlife Sanctuary in November 2018 with a degloving injury on his right proximal leg that extended to the body wall. He was also emaciated, dehydrated, and had parasites.

We immediately warmed him and gave him fluids by mouth following the protocol listed on the EmerAid website. We then proceeded to gavage-feed EmerAid Intensive Care Piscivore every four hours. He quickly graduated to eating whole fish.

We then treated with pain medication, antibiotics, and dewormer for the parasites.

He was taken to LSU where the severity of the wound required surgical debridement. When he returned to Wings of Hope, we administered antibiotics to the wound and pulled the skin back over the wound daily for several months.

Based on his care and the EmerAid Intensive Care, this pelican continued to heal and thrive.
