Cooper’s Hawk Recovers From Impact

Cooper's hawk held in gloved handsThe following story was shared with us by The Avian Conservation Center in South Carolina.

This adult Cooper’s hawk was found lying by the side of a busy road, very likely having been hit by a car. Luckily he was able to be contained and transported to the Avian Conservation Center by one of their transporters. He was found to have moderate head trauma but no other major injuries when assessed by the staff.

Over the next four days, he was maintained on a diet of EmerAid Intensive Care until he had recovered enough from his head trauma to eat on his own. Happily, once the bird recovered from the head trauma and he was eating on his own, it was possible to assess his flight and behavior in one of the outdoor enclosures for a few days. After the staff was sure that all the bird’s issues had resolved, he was able to be released back to the wild.
