Zenaida Dove Survives Cat Attack

Zenaida dove standing on wood planking, perhaps a porchThe following story about a Zenaida dove was shared with us by St. John Wildlife Rehabilitation in St. John Island, U.S. Virgin Islands.

This Zenaida dove fledgling weighed 90 grams (about 3.2 ounces) on intake. The bird was found in the town of Coral Bay after a likely cat attack.

EmerAid IC Omnivore was used as initial food via tube feeding. The dove also received wound management and supportive care.

The dove started to self-feed and the wounds healed. The Zenaida dove is similar to the mourning dove species seen in the U.S. mainland.

This dove regained health and was released back to the wild. It weighed 110 grams (about 3.9 ounces) on release.
