Brown House Snake Badly Bitten

The following story about a brown house snake was submitted by Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital in South Africa.

A brown house snake (Boaedon capensis) was found on a residential property, a little worse for wear. He had been badly bitten by a cat and was in need of urgent attention.

Apart from all the puncture wounds, he also had a severe head tilt and resultant neurological issues — there was a wound right into his skull. He was immediately treated for shock, and given pain medication and antibiotics. His wounds were treated with F10 ointment on an almost daily basis.

While under our care, he has benefited from being tube-fed EmerAid IC Carnivore, as he was unable to eat on his own. Initially we did not have much hope, he had a serious brain injury and his prognosis was guarded.

The little snake surprised us all. He has made a remarkable recovery. His progress has been extraordinary, so much so that he is almost back to normal!

Soon he will be ready to be free again.
