Young Pigeon Recovers From Broken Leg

pigeon with bandaged leg standing on tableThe following story about a pigeon was shared with us by Olive’s Place Dove & Pigeon Sanctuary, Inc. in Oklahoma.

An extremely emaciated, juvenile pigeon presented with lethargy and a broken leg. After warming the bird and giving subcutaneous fluids, she was given a small amount of very diluted EmerAid IC Omnivore.

An X-ray confirmed a bad break already beginning to fuse, so her veterinarian secured the leg in a cast.

EmerAid was continued as her only diet for an additional 48 hours until droppings normalized and the crop was moving food proficiently. A diet of pellets was then offered.

Once the pigeon was enthusiastically self-feeding, she was then offered an expanded diet of seeds and grains. She gained weight steadily and fully recovered use of her leg.
