Flap-Neck Chameleon Saved From Illegal Pet Trade

flap-neck chameleon held in hand being fed via syringeThe following story about a flap-neck chameleon was submitted by Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital in South Africa.

This flap-neck chameleon (Chamaeleo dilepis) was brought in by a concerned member of the public. They had confiscated it from an illegal, roadside seller.

This chameleon was emaciated and extremely dehydrated, with a sunken left eye. Taken out of its habitat to be sold illegally, this poor chameleon was probably without food and water for a prolonged period of time.

We started treatment by hydrating him and treating his injured eye. We also started tube-feeding him with EmerAid IC Carnivore. This built up his strength so he could start eating on his own soon.

We treat indigenous animals free of charge, relying solely on the donations and support of our community.
