Red-Tailed Hawk Rehabbed After Head Trauma

Red-tailed hawks are one of the most common types of large hawks found in Ohio. This young bird had been grounded for an unknown period of time in a residential area in Columbus, Ohio. By the time the rescuers had found the raptor, he was extremely emaciated and dehydrated.

He was admitted to Ohio Wildlife Center Community Wildlife Hospital in June for an initial exam, observations, and treatment. We suspected this bird was probably hit by a car and sustained head trauma. He was treated with anti-inflammatory and pain medications.

With treatments, subQ fluids and slow feeding with EmerAid IC Carnivore three times daily, we were able to successfully stabilize this hawk and slowly begin introducing solid foods back to his diet.

The EmerAid IC Carnivore helped this bird in its recovery and time at our Wildlife Hospital. We were successfully able to release this bird back to its home range in the wild in August.
