Injured Brown Pelican Returns To The Wild

brown pelican walks out of carrier onto dock for releaseThe following story about a brown pelican was shared with us by The Avian Conservation Center/Center For Birds Of Prey in South Carolina.

Brown pelicans are commonly seen along the coast of South Carolina year-round. Juvenile brown pelicans admitted to our clinic are often hypothermic and emaciated.

When this little pelican was admitted in early October, he was very thin with a suspected soft tissue injury to his left wrist.

When rehabilitating pelicans, we are very careful about avoiding what is known as refeeding syndrome. This pelican was on EmerAid IC Piscivore for a week before we were able to start introducing fish.

After almost 6 weeks in care, this young pelican was able to return back to the wild.
