\"swallow-tailedThe following story about a swallow-tail kite was shared with us by Clinic For The Rehabilitation Of Wildlife<\/a> in Florida.<\/em><\/p>\n

This female swallow-tailed kite was admitted to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife on March 25 after being found down on the ground unable to fly. The finder reported that the kite was being attacked by eagles.<\/p>\n

Upon arrival to CROW, veterinarians found the bird to be quiet, alert, and responsive. Her admit weight was 450 grams (about 15.9 ounces) with a thin body condition score (BCS). Because the kite had an abnormally quiet mentation, we were able to take a radiograph without putting her under anesthesia. We used a raptor hood to cover her head and keep her quiet while a radiograph was obtained.<\/p>\n

\"swallow-tailThe radiograph revealed that the kite had a large, shelled egg but no fractures or other obvious injuries. We set her up in a cage to rest after admit. Within an hour she laid her egg.<\/p>\n

We began supportive care with some subcutaneous fluids, medications, and started a feeding plan with EmerAid IC Carnivore<\/a> calculated at 3% of her body weight. We started with the EmerAid Carnivore to optimize nutrition while being gentle on her system. We were unable to determine an exact cause to her quiet mentation and why she was found unable to fly.<\/p>\n

Over the next day, we transitioned her onto soft pieces of mice. She began willingly \u201ctong\u201d feeding without us needing to pick her up. In an effort to preserve her pristine primary feathers and rectrices, we created a tall platform to put her food on so she could easily reach without having to leave her perch.<\/p>\n

\"swallow-tailWithin a few days, her mentation had improved and she was much more active in her cage. We moved her to an outdoor aviary to condition for release. At this point her BCS was adequate and her weight was good.<\/p>\n

Vet staff cleared her for release on March 30. Due to the risk of damaging her feathers during transport, she was released off CROW property just adjacent to the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
