With a wildlife center that is only a year old, we are still getting animal firsts. The best one yet arrived on Christmas Eve. She was a wild porcupine with severe sarcoptic mange, primarily on her head and tail. She suffered from secondary skin infections and an upper respiratory tract infection. On top of all this, she was emaciated and dehydrated.<\/p>\n

We named her Noelle because it was Christmas Eve, and she was our first porcupine patient. Our priority was to get Noelle hydrated and then to get some nourishment into her. Of course we turned to EmerAid Omnivore<\/a>, because it is recommended for rodents. Porcupines are large rodents.<\/p>\n

Once she was stabilized, we began treating the mites that caused the mange. The medication quickly killed the mites, and we marked the calendar to treat again in four weeks to get any eggs that consequently hatched. After hours and hours of cleaning Noelle’s badly crusted skin and a regimen of antibiotics for the infections, our wildlife vet tech was finally able to announce that Noelle was free of mites and on the mend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
