The following story about a mourning dove was shared with us by Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a> in Virginia.<\/em><\/p>\n

This mourning dove was found as a nestling orphaned in the middle of a busy road. The finders were unable to find a nest to attempt to reunite it with its parents, so took it home.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, before bringing the baby dove to Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary, the finders provided unprofessional care and fed the dove mashed up cat food and other inappropriate diet elements. When the dove came into the sanctuary, the staff had their work cut out for them attempting to clear all of the inappropriate diet from the bird’s system, while still trying to provide enough nutrition for the dove to grow and develop normally.<\/p>\n

EmerAid IC Carnivore<\/a> was instrumental in helping the staff to rehabilitate this patient. The inappropriate food created “crop stasis” in this patient, which occurs when food becomes stuck in the crop of the bird and does not get processed. The staff started gavage-feeding this patient with a very watered down mix of EmerAid and another bird food to provide small amounts of proper nutrition while getting enough fluids into the bird to start washing away the stuck elements.<\/p>\n

Staff gradually increased the thickness of the formula as the bird started to clear the foreign elements. After one month in care receiving EmerAid and another bird food as its main source of food, this bird was able to grow and start eating food on its own.
