All of them had weakness of the hind legs and were struggling to stand. While the exact cause is unknown, the top suspects were algal bloom toxicity and bacterial infection.<\/p>\n<p>All six of the red knots (a type of sandpiper) received fluid support and <a href=\"https:\/\/emeraid.com\/vet\/emeraid-piscivore\/\">EmerAid IC Piscivore<\/a> nutritional support for the first three to five days of hospitalization. They also received medications as needed for deworming and\/or immune system support.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12086\" src=\"https:\/\/emeraid.com\/vet\/wp-content\/uploads\/red-knot-4-birds-sos-20240111-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"four red knot birds standing on ground in outdoor enclosure\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emeraid.com\/vet\/wp-content\/uploads\/red-knot-4-birds-sos-20240111-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emeraid.com\/vet\/wp-content\/uploads\/red-knot-4-birds-sos-20240111-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/emeraid.com\/vet\/wp-content\/uploads\/red-knot-4-birds-sos-20240111-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emeraid.com\/vet\/wp-content\/uploads\/red-knot-4-birds-sos-20240111.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>When they were strong enough to stand, they began eating on their own and were switched to a solid diet. While they were initially hospitalized in separate enclosures, they were placed together into groups once they were strong enough to stand and eat.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, four of the six are in the reconditioning phase in our outdoor enclosures and two are still gaining weight in the hospital.
