\"collage \"grayThe following story about a gray fox was submitted by All Things Wild Rehabilitation<\/a> in Texas.<\/em><\/p>\n

A little, female, gray fox<\/a> was returning to her den very early in the morning after a night of hunting. She was hit by a car while crossing a street in Leander. She must have been panting, because the head-on blow caused her to bite into her tongue. As she lay in the street, a kind person stopped to pick her up and look for help.<\/p>\n

The rescuer called another person who knew someone on the All Things Wild staff who then helped coordinate the fox\u2019s rescue.<\/p>\n

The fox arrived at the rehabilitation center after losing a lot of blood from the tongue bites and with major head trauma (concussion) from the blow. She was limp and listless, not her normal, wild, feisty self. She was named Gidget after the playful, winsome, teenage character<\/a> in movies and on TV in the \u201950s and \u201960s.<\/p>\n

X-rays revealed a broken scapula (shoulder blade). But the first order of business was to stop the bleeding and treat the head trauma. Initially, the staff gave Gidget lots of fluids and spoon-fed her easily digestible, nutritious EmerAid IC Carnivore<\/a> food. With her injured tongue, she gingerly lapped small amounts of the warm, gravy-like food from the spoon.<\/p>\n

Several days later, Gidget was able to lap up the EmerAid on her own, but she continued to lie quietly in her cage in the intensive care unit. She opened her eyes occasionally to see what was going on. The good news was she continued to improve.<\/p>\n

About two weeks after she was hit by the car, she was alert enough to respond to the staff. But again, she was still suffering from head trauma and was far from her normal, wild self. Usually no one would be able to hold a healthy, wild fox without being badly bitten and clawed!<\/p>\n

Eventually, Gidget was well enough to go after live prey the staff put in her cage. What a good sign that was! She was beginning to behave like a wild fox.<\/p>\n

Her medical treatment is not over. We are continuing to monitor the broken scapula and to keep her as quiet as possible to aid in the repair. However, she is well on her way to returning to her wild self and to her territory in the wild.<\/p>\n
